Hedge had been practising.
A lot.
He had been practising for six months, three days and what felt like at least a thousand evenings. At first, the little reed had made nothing but a squeak. Then came a wheeze. Then, one glorious afternoon, Hedge produced a sound that was almost — but not quite — a musical note.
Uddin had clapped his paws. Hedge had bowed. And then they had both fallen into the stream laughing.
But tonight was different….”
